Orange Grove High School has partnered with the Riverside County Office of Education to offer a Regional Occupational Practices course in Construction. This class is anchored by a hands-on, vocationally oriented philosophy which allows students learn and apply relevant skills. Over the last two years class interest has grown, resulting in increased enrollment and the addition of an after school section of the course.

The course prepares students in all aspects of the construction business. Students first learn the importance of safety, tool identification and usage, material resource planning, as well as practical hands on applications. Over the past two years, Orange Grove students have built a stand alone tiled BBQ island with a sink and plumbing, tool sheds, equipped with electrical wiring, and shingled roofing. Last year, Orange Grove was awarded a grant to design, build, and sustain a working garden on campus. Collaboration between the construction program and the science department yielded many student success stories from actual construction techniques to the learning of plant biological standards.

Garden Before Garden After

Though the construction class it is evident that students also gained many real world applications that go beyond the classroom, such as; dealing with others, working in teams, completing tasks, and taking a project from start to finish. This year, Orange Grove hopes to gain additional funding to take both the construction class and the science of the working garden to the next level.
